Javier and Maria Medina are on a mission to bring the Gospel to the Spanish speaking
population of the Boerne area and to disciple them to maturity in Christ. It truly is a family
mission as their three children partner with them in the work. Vanessa works in children’s
ministry, Marco serves in video and recording communications, and Isabel staffs the sound
booth. The Medinas want to bring Christ to the Hispanic community, not only through
preaching and training those who attend their home Bible study and church services but
seek them by visiting neighborhoods and communities of Spanish-speakers in and around
their hometown of Boerne.
Although the Medinas are in their mid-forties, already they have been married 26 years
and emigrated to the U.S. nearly a decade before that; Javier is from El Salvador and Maria
from Nuevo Leon, Mexico. They have worked hard to advance their education for the
purpose of enriching their ministry skills, with Javier receiving from the Baptist University
of the Americas in San Antonio degrees in Music and in Theology, and Maria, in Human
Behavior and in Theology. Javier is enrolled in Logsdon Seminary working on his Master of
Divinity degree, a three-year post-graduate professional degree. Maria is studying for her
Masters in Counseling.
After 11 years on staff in the leadership team of a bilingual Spanish-English fellowship at
Oak Hills Church in San Antonio, with Javier leading worship, and Maria serving in
production services and weekly Bible studies, they received the call with their leadership’s
blessing to plant an independent church to mature disciples. Along with another couple,
longtime workers with them in the Oak Hills fellowship, and together their own three
children, they have begun a new church plant called Beyond the Cross. The church was
named so to emphasize that salvation, receiving forgiveness through the cross, isn’t the
culmination of the walk of discipleship, but it is the gateway to a path which leads to spiritual
maturity.
This new church plant started meeting January 2020 in a rented church building off of I-10
Saturday evenings at 5pm where they divided by age groups; children go to Children’s
Church and adults have a worship service. Monday evenings the Medinas hold a Bible study
in their Boerne home where more advanced discipleship is offered. Although they plan this
fellowship will turn bilingual eventually, its ministry language at this time is Spanish.
Through an introduction via Hill Country Daily Bread, Javier and Maria started visiting
Currey Creek on Sunday mornings and came to love the teaching of the pastors here.
Javier met with John to share about his church plant, but also the need to have a sponsoring
church under his agreement with the Baptist General Convention of Texas. After several
meetings which culminated with a presentation to the Currey Creek elders, Currey Creek
officially became the sponsoring church of Beyond the Cross. Discussions soon began
about moving church services to the Currey Creek campus to allow for Beyond the Cross
to have Sunday afternoon services instead of being limited to Saturday evening, and on
June 14th, this became a reality! Javier now offices in an unused portable space and the
Currey Creek campus now stays busy through the afternoon hours every Sunday as the
two churches find new and innovative ways to partner for the gospel here in Boerne.
We’re thankful that the Lord has allowed Currey Creek to actively participate in another
Boerne area church plant. Would you commit to pray for Javier, Maria, and their family
that the Lord would bless their ministry here, and that the two congregations of the Body
of Christ would work together to build his Kingdom?
