Exalt, Engage, Enrich
In our every day, we say certain phrases so routinely that we forget where that particular phrase originated. Jesus’ famous Sermon on the Mount is packed full of normal phrases that we, and our culture, use over and over. Phrases like, “Turn the other cheek” (5:39), “No one can serve two masters” (6:24), “Judge not that you be not judged” (7:1,3), “Ask and it will be given to you” (7:7), “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” (7:12), and most famously “Our Father, who art in Heaven…” (6:9). It is remarkable how Jesus’ words have carried throughout the last 2,000 years. This semester, we will look deeply at our Savior's words, and uncover how these routine words become real transformation intended for our souls.
“We live in a culture where morality is relative – where anything goes, everyone is free to be me, to do whatever works for you, and to live and let live. Personal freedoms, rights and lifestyles are demanded without regard to far-reaching consequences, and certainly without regard for God. But the nature of today’s culture is not isolated to the present. Few periods in history are as much like our own as the time of the Judges, in which “everyone did what was right in his own eyes.”
As the nation of Israel repeatedly turns its back on God and sinks deep into rebellion and wickedness, above it all we see God’s hand working in, through and despite His people. The grace of God stops at nothing to pursue and deliver an utterly depraved, undeserving nation.
Come and discover how personal, relevant and applicable the Old Testament is to our lives and our world today as God’s amazing grace is revealed in a place that may surprise you – the book of Judges.
